- As Jesus Came That Christmas Night
As Jesus Came That Christmas Night
This new Christmas hymn connects Jesus’ first coming with our eager anticipation of his return. And the parallels between that first Christmas and Jesus’ return are striking. Just as Mary longed for her child—the promised Savior—to be born, so we long for the new heaven and earth that comes at Christ’s return. Just as the shepherds went joyfully to find the newborn babe, so we will joyfully greet the risen and victorious Christ on the Last Day. And most beautiful of all, just as that newborn child would shed his blood for us, so on the Last Day we will find our confidence and comfort in the very same place! Oh, come, Immanuel!
1. As Jesus came that Christmas night, So he will come again. We wait his advent eagerly: All earth is Bethlehem. As weary Mary looked and longed For that most holy birth, So we and all creation yearn For God's new heav'n and earth.
Refrain: Oh, come, oh, come, Immanuel, God with us! Oh, come, oh, come, Immanuel, God with us!
2. As angels sang the stars awake On that Judean night, So they will once again announce The coming of the Christ. As shepherds, poor and lowly men, Made haste to find the Babe, So we, unworthy as we are, Will greet him unafraid. Refrain
3. As pure and holy Jesus wore Our sinful flesh and blood, So he has robed us in his grace And covered guilt with good. As Jesus came– Immanuel!– So he will come again And beckon us to newborn bliss And endless life with him. Refrain
