Written in the 1600s, this text by Paul Gerhardt originally had 16 verses. John Wesley later translated it and reduced the number of verses to 9, of which 4 can be found today in Christian Worship #479. Gerhardt composed the verses to echo a prayer of thanks found in Johann Arndt's devotional book entitled, "Garden of Paradise."
