This Broken Bread
"This Broken Bread" is a new text written by Laurie Gauger which highlights the wonderful blessings of Holy Communion. The text points out that we bring nothing to this sacrament--we come "unworthy, weary, worn." But the text also highlights what God gives us at this table--not just bread and wine, but also Jesus' true body and blood. The high point of the text comes in the final line, where Jesus' own words remind us of the real and powerful blessings God gives us in this meal: "My life and death have set you free."
1. This broken bread—not bread alone but Jesus’ body, broken, torn
Upon the cross at Calvary—this bread he offers now to me.
Refrain: I come, unworthy, weary, worn. My soul is yearning for my Lord.
“Do this,” he said, “rememb’ring me. My life and death have set you free.”
2. This brimming wine—not wine alone but Jesus’ blood, that richly flowed
From wounds he bore upon the tree—this wine he offers now to me. Refrain
3. A miracle, a mystery: His blood and body here for me.
I fix my eyes on things unseen. I eat and drink eternity. Refrain
